Marathon Runner

AMAZING Nurse

How did you start running?

I started running when I got to college. I was always active in high school in sports, but never a runner. In college I missed being active, and started to become uncomfortable in my body too. I went with a friend to the campus workout center, and she was going to run so I ran too. I remember it was SO HARD to run for 30 minutes, but I didn't want to be a "wimp" and walk even thought my LUNGS were ON FIRE! I was hooked after that and it was my escape from the stress of nursing school. I even learned to read while I was running so I could multitask and study my notes! (nursing school nerd...haha!) Also, while I was in college, I started working at a running store in town and helped out with running training groups. This job helped me to learn a ton about shoes and apparel! I then participated in tons of 5ks, and eventually trained and ran a few half marathons and two full marathons. (last one being in 2013)

What is your most memorable running moment?

Definitely, running down the hill to the finish line of the Twin Cities Full Marathon in 2013.

Where is your favorite place to run?

At the lake

What races have you run?

Most memorable would be The Dick Beardsley Half Marathon (x2) in Detroit Lakes, The Half Marathon in Fargo ND (x2) The Full Marathon in Fargo 2011 and the Twin Cities Full Marathon 2013 and a bunch of random 5ks, 10ks, etc 5.

Do you have a favorite distance to run?

I like the half marathon - it is doable to train for versus all the hours you have to put in to train for a full!

What is your favorite race memory?

Definitely, finishing the full marathon in the twin cities

What are your running goals for the future?

Just to make it sustainable for life. I would like to be a mom one day and one that sets an example of being active - being able to take our babies for runs in the stroller..introduce them to family 5ks and kids runs...and be able to strap on shoes and just go! Not stressing over training plans

How does a typical week of training look for you?

I did recently sign up for a half marathon in August! So… I need to start getting some longer runs in each week. I run 30-45 minutes about 3 days a week.

Outside of running, what do you enjoy?

I love to bake cookies, and actually do it as a little side business for friends and family! I love being with my husband and dog. I love being at the lake. I love anything coffee, a good cocktail with friends, summer bonfires, and having downtime just for me!

What do you like to wear running?

Capris, shoes, socks, sports bra and a tank!

What are your favorite running accessories?

I love my polar watch and heart rate monitor. I also always love having my Samsung tablet too because I use treadmill time to catch up on my favorite blogs and magazines

What type of sneakers do you wear?

I wear Mizuno Wave Riders

What are your favorite foods?

Oh man...this is a tough one! I'm kind of a boring eater! I like to keep things simple. I love making protein waffles/pancakes, almond butter and sunbutter, love proteins like fresh fish and chicken, love me some fresh summer veggies like zucchini, beets, squash and avocados - and I LOVE fresh chocolate chip cookies!

Do you have a motto?

Lately, it has been one my mom always referred to.. "This too shall pass."

Do you have advice for other runners?

1. Make sure you are in the RIGHT running shoes! Go to a specialty running store - one that looks at your gait to see what type of running shoe you SHOULD be in. (neutral, mild stability, stability) - try on and see what feels good on YOUR foot. What is a good shoe for your friend might not be the right one for YOUR foot and gait. This is so incredibly important for injury prevention!

2. Fuel your body properly with whole foods and don't overtrain and undereat.

3. Crosstrain. Don't let running be your everything. <3
